Background of the Study
Ancient city walls are emblematic of a community’s historical resilience and architectural ingenuity. In Benin City, these walls represent not only defensive structures but also cultural symbols that encapsulate centuries of history (Omoregie, 2023). This study examines the methods employed in constructing and preserving these ancient fortifications, highlighting their significance in local history and identity. The preservation of city walls is crucial for maintaining a tangible connection to the past, offering insights into ancient urban planning and military strategies (Ighodaro, 2024). As modernization continues to exert pressure on historical structures, conservation efforts have become paramount. The study reviews existing preservation techniques, evaluates the challenges posed by environmental degradation, and discusses community initiatives aimed at safeguarding these monuments. An interdisciplinary approach combining archaeology, conservation science, and heritage management is employed to propose effective preservation strategies (Akinola, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Modern urban expansion and environmental degradation threaten the preservation of ancient city walls in Benin City. The lack of comprehensive preservation policies and limited funding exacerbate these challenges, leading to deterioration of these historic structures (Osagie, 2023). This study addresses the need for sustainable conservation methods to ensure the integrity of this cultural heritage.
